“The answer is love, that’s all that I know”
Berlin-based fashion designer Christine Mayer has built a fashion career on Upcycling and re-purposing clothing and breathing new life into old garments. She is a pioneer of three-dimensional free draping with fabric, an art form she has adapted and developed from her studies in classical Japanese drapery.
When it comes to clothing design, Christine’s style is recognisable for its collage aesthetics; where pattern and fabric constantly interrupt each other’s spaces. “Material that has been marked by life” is one of Christine’s biggest inspirations.
Christine’s life is interwoven with beauty and creativity. As a fashion designer she is a pioneer of Upcycling and has become recognised worldwide with collections that push the boundaries of art and fashion (MAYER. Peace Collection). For years she has been leading creative retreats for participants to explore and experience their work in a holistic way and open their inner channels to let creativity flow again.
The aim of Christine’s teachings is to learn and experience a new way of dealing with textiles. It’s about a conscious opening that moves away from the two-dimensional space, towards a unique three-dimensionality. She teaches students and teachers at international fashion colleges and leads creative retreats and workshops all around the world.
“Christine Mayer’s most recent collections has been made entirely from recycled fabric with a lot of love. As she puts it, she wants her clothes to ‘embrace the people who wear them’. What we appear to have lost over time is the attachment to and love for our clothing, and through her work Mayer reminds us of the great tenacity of this connection. Christine Mayer is teaching the art of garment upcycling; the creative reuse of worn and used fabrics. She gives people the opportunity and skills to work with old and loved fabrics and to re-imagine them as brand new garments.”
